UEFA Champions League Result: Manchester United 2-1 Wolfsburg Date: 30 September 2015 Venue: Old Trafford Manchester United recorded their first Champions League group stage victory with a 2-1 result against Wolfsburg on Wednesday. The Germans made the perfect start to their trip, taking the lead only four minutes into the clash. One-touch passing saw Kruse slide in Daniel Caligiuri who outwitted the offside trap and lifted the ball over David de Gea. The Red Devils came close to a swift equaliser as Anthony Martial made his presence felt by beating two defenders before sending his shot just wide of the post in the 15th minute. United's opening arrived in the 33rd minute when Juan Mata's cross was handled in the area by Caliguiri. The referee pointed to the spot and Mata slotted the penalty to level matters. Luis van Gaal's charges were in the lead for the first time in the 53rd minute when Chris Smalling netted their second. A cross was half cleared but only as far as Bastian Schweinsteiger whose mishit volley was played on by Mata for Smalling to poke home. Former Chelsea man Andre Schurrle came within inches of giving the visitors their equaliser in the 71st minute. He made room for himself to shoot with pressure being put on him by Blind, but his effort went just wide.
