UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid Snatch Late Winner

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid Snatch Late Winner

Atalanta 0-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid needed a late goal to edge ten-man Atalanta 1-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 clash at Gewiss Stadium.

Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane made only one change from the win over Real Valladolid, as Isco replaced Mariano in the line-up.

Atalanta had a horrible start as they were reduced to ten men in the 17th minute after Remo Freuler was red-carded for denying Ferland Mendy a clear goal-scoring opportunity when he was clear on goal.

Vinicius Junior came close to breaking the deadlock for Madrid six minutes before the break after having a goal at his mercy but the Atalanta defence made a crucial block before goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini made a great save to keep out Casemiro's header from Toni Kroos' free-kick.

Vinicius Junior almost got the breakthrough ten minutes inside the second stanza with a strike inside the six-yard box that was diverted over the bar by the challenge of Robin Gosens.

With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Mendy snatched the winner for Los Blancos and a crucial away goal in the last four minutes with a low curling strike from outside the box from a corner situation.

Borussia Monchengladbach 0-2 Manchester City

Manchester City took control of their last 16 tie after beating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 in the first-leg at Puskas Arena.

Man City made five changes from the narrow win against Arsenal, as Kyle Walker, Aymeric Laporte, Phil Foden, Rodri and Gabriel Jesus were all recalled.

Bernardo Silva eventually broke the deadlock for Pep Guardiola's charges on 29 minutes with a header on the blind side inside the box past goalkeeper Yann Sommer after a dipping cross by Joao Cancelo.

Gabriel Jesus had a big chance to double the lead for City ten minutes after the break after latching onto a loose ball that saw him go clear on goal inside the box but he took to many touches, allowing Matthias Ginter to make a tackle in the nick of time.

Jesus redeemed himself in the 65th minute as he doubled the lead for the Citizens with an out-stretched toe-poke under pressure from close range after a headed cut-back by Silva, which proved to be the final goal of the game.
