UEFA Champions League Match Report: Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke 04, 10 March 2015

UEFA Champions League

Round of 16

Full Time:  Real Madrid 3-4 Schalke 04 (*Real Madrid progress 5-4 on aggregate)

Date: 10 March 2015

Venue: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

A brace from Cristiano Ronaldo saw Real Madrid into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League despite a 4-3 loss against Schalke 04 in a second leg, round of 16 match at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

The win sees Madrid progress 5-4 on aggregate after winning the first leg 2-0 in Germany.

Schalke controlled the opening exchanges of the match and made their dominance pay off in the 20th minute after a swift passing move saw Christian Fuchs in space just inside the box and he duly fired the ball into the bottom left corner, 1-0 (2-1 on aggregate).

Madrid, though, hit back five minutes later through none other than Cristiano Ronaldo who headed home a Toni Kroos header, 1-1 (3-1 on aggregate).

Schalke continued to attack after that and came close to finding their second goal in the 40th minute when a stinging 30-yard shot from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar struck the woodwork.

Seconds later, however, and Schalke did find their second goal after Iker Casillas spilled an initial long range shot straight into the path of Huntelaar who tapped home from close range, 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate).

Madrid, though, hit back again in the dying seconds of the half through Ronaldo once more, this time heading home a left wing cross from Fabio Coentrao, 2-2 (4-2 on aggregate).

The second half saw Madrid start brightly and they took the lead for the first time on the night in the 52nd minute after Karim Benzema dribbled his way past three defenders and the keeper before slotting home from six-yards out, 3-2 (5-2 on aggregate).

The match swung to the other end of the park five minutes later when Leroy Sane equalised for Schalke on the night with a spectacular 20-yard shot that found the top corner of the net, 3-3 (5-3 on aggregate).

Schalke continued to push forward and found their fourth goal in the 84th minute when a 18-yard shot from Huntelaar struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line, 4-3 (5-4 on aggregate).

That set-up a frantic final five minutes which saw Schalke pushing forward, but the Real Madrid defence held firm to lose by only a goal on the night and progress into the quarterfinals of the European club competition.

Porto 4-0 Basel:

In the other UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday night, Porto ran out 4-0 winners over Basel in their second leg, round of 16 match at the Estadio Do Dragao.

The win sees Porto progress into the quarterfinals of the competition 5-1 on aggregate after the first leg finished 1-1.

Yacine Brahimi opened the scoring for Porto on the night in the 14th minute before Hector Herrera doubled their lead in the 47th minute.

Casemiro scored their third goal in the 56th minute to seal victory on the night, while the icing on the cake was their fourth goal courtesy of Vincent Aboubakar.
