The 27-year-old was close to being sent off in the first 45 minutes of their clash with the French giants on Wednesday after an off-the-ball incident with opposition midfielder Leandro Paredes.
Replays showed the Brazilian seemingly leaning his head into the Argentine's, although the match official, who took a look at the incident on a pitch-side monitor, believed his actions only warranted a yellow card, much to the surprise of Thomas Tuchel and both sets of players.
A few more rash tackles led many to believe that Fred would be substituted off at the break, but he returned to the pitch for the second half, and was eventually sent off in the 70th minute.
Asked if he considered substituting the defensive midfielder, Solskjaer admitted he did toy with the idea.
"Yeah (I considered taking him off)," he told BT Sport.
"Fred has played really well. We spoke about staying calm and on your feet.
"The second yellow card was nowhere near a foul. Ander knows that."
Opinion: Why Solskjaer Should Be Embarrassed
The Norwegian added that: "Fred shouldn't put his head towards him (for the first yellow). I don't think he touched him. He was a bit lucky to stay on."
