With the Red Devils being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by FC Barcelona on Tuesday night, their elimination ensured that the club has not gone beyond the quarter-final stage for the eighth successive season.
Having knocked out Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round, this campaign could actually be seen as an improvement, but United will look back on many disappointing European runs in recent seasons.
Last year, they were eliminated by Sevilla in the round of 16, although the year before they did win the UEFA Europa League under Jose Mourinho.
In 2015/16 they were eliminated at the group stage – in a group that included "smaller" teams such as PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg and CSKA Moscow – while in 2014/15 they did not take part in European competition.
In 2013/14, United were knocked out by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, and the year before they reached the last 16 only to be defeated by Real Madrid, while in 2011/12, they recorded another disappointing group stage exit despite being in a relatively easy group with Basel, Benfica and Otelul Galati.
Despite United looking back at eight years of dire performances in Europe, players such as Sanchez get paid massive wages. The Chilean, who has played just 210 minutes of Champions League football this season, reportedly earns a whopping £350 000 (R6.4 million) a week at the club – more than any other player in England.

Paul Pogba, who is playing the best season of his career in terms of goal returns but had two quiet nights against Barcelona, receives £290 000 (R5.3 million) a week.
Even stars such as Juan Mata, who earns £140 000 (R2.6 million) a week and Ashley Young with £120 000 (R2.2 million) a week are among United's top earners despite seemingly not cutting it in Europe's biggest club competition.
