His strike in the 89th minute helped Real turn the game against the Portuguese's boyhood club on its head, with Alvaro Morata netting the winner in the 94th minute to secure a 2-1 triumph.
But the goal did not only help Ronaldo's side begin their Champions League defence with a win, it also meant that he continued his record of scoring in every game against his previous clubs, as AS pointed out.
Ronaldo scored his first goal against a former club when facing Sporting with Manchester United in a 1-0 win in September 2007. He continued the record in the rematch in December 2007, scoring an injury-time winner in a 2-1 victory – also with a free-kick.
His next goal against a former club came when he faced United with Real in February 2013, heading in the equaliser in a 1-1 draw. In the return leg, he scored the winner to send his old side packing with a 2-1 scoreline.
Overall, he has now scored in all five games against previous clubs of his, and will have another chance to extend his record when Los Blancos travel to Lisbon on 22 November.
