The new campaign kicked off with a bang as Napoli defeated last season's winners Liverpool. The Reds became the first defending champions to lose their opening fixture in the competition since AC Milan in 1994. However, the defeat could be a good omen for Jurgen Klopp's men because Milan ended up defending the trophy that year.
FC Barcelona's 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund also had a few talking points, with Lionel Messi returning from injury to make his first appearance this season. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, though, ended up being the hero after saving the first penalty of this UCL campaign, denying Marco Reus from the spot.
Ansu Fati wrote his name into the history books once again by becoming the Blaugrana's youngest player to feature in the Champions League.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, continued his longstanding battle with Atletico Madrid and seemingly taunted their supporters with another gesture in Juventus' 2-2 draw with Los Rojiblancos at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Meanwhile, his former club Real Madrid were thrashed 3-0 by Paris Saint-Germain, thanks to a brace by ex-Los Blancos winger Angel Di Maria and a solitary strike by Thomas Meunier. Kylian Mbappe and Neymar were both sidelined for the game, and visibly enjoyed the show from the stands.
