Brescia president Massimo Cellino

With Italy being one of the nations hardest-hit by the coronavirus, a Serie A side has sensationally threatened to stage a boycott if the league season resumes.

Brescia president Massimo Cellino has threatened that his side will boycott all of the league's remaining fixtures Serie A decides to resume football.

"This season doesn't make sense any more," he said, as reported by The World Game.

"We've stopped, no team will return as before, the matches will be behind closed doors, plus there's a risk to the health of the athletes.

"For me, to go back to business is pure madness. If they force us to play, I'd be willing to not field the team and lose the matches 3-0 out of respect for the citizens of Brescia and their loved ones who are no longer there."

Cellino also stressed that rearranging the league for a later date would jeopardise the 2020/21 campaign, and that ruining two seasons instead of one would put the sport's integrity at risk.

"It's arrogant and irresponsible," the 63-year-old continued.

"My speech is primarily based on two pillars: respect for health and safety of the footballing system. After losing this season, we will also ruin the next one, that would be decisive to start again."

The former Leeds United owner's comments come at a time when Brescia are in 20th position in the Serie A table – nine points away from safety – and, theoretically, could stand to benefit the most should the Serie A campaign be cancelled.
