Serie A Report: Juventus v AS Roma 01 August 2020

Result: Juventus 1-3 AS Roma

Date: 01 August 2020

Venue: Allianz Stadium

Serie A Champions Juventus, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, ended their domestic season with a 3-1 defeat to AS Roma on Saturday night.

Bianconeri made wholesale changes, with only Daniele Rugani, Leonardo Bonucci, Simone Muratore, Gonzalo Higuain and Federico Bernardeschi retained while Ronaldo was excluded from the match-day squad and Paulo Dybala missed out with a thigh injury.

Juventus had a bright start as Higuain opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a half-volley from the centre of the six-yard box after Adrien Rabiot flicked on Bernardeschi's corner at the near post.

However, the visitors replied in the 23rd minute with a well taken corner of their own, as Nikola Kalinic glanced home a free header past goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny from Diego Perotti's cross.

Roma should have been ahead eight minutes before the break after Riccardo Calafiori smashed home a powerful volley from Szczesny's rebound but the goal was disallowed, as the corner swung out of play before the Bianconeri shot-stopper punched it away.

Maurizio Sarri's charges conceded a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Danilo blocked Gianluca Rocchi's way in a collision inside the box, which allowed  Perotti to slot home from 12 yards.

Roma came back from the break with a lot of energy and eventually went 3-1 up seven minutes inside the second stanza after Perotti struck a low shot that came off Merih Demiral to complete his brace.

Aaron Ramsey came close to pulling a goal back for Juventus on the hour-mark after receiving a good pass just outside the box but his strike came off the post.

The visitors were still threatening on the break and they nearly extended their lead with 22 minutes remaining after Perotti went past two defenders and unleashed a strike from outside the box  but Szczesny was on hand to make the save.

Giamco Vrioni almost pulled a goal back for the Old Lady in the last minute with a volley that was brilliantly parried away by Daniel Fuzato, but 3-1 was how the clash ended as Roma clinch fifth spot.
