Result: Inter Milan 2-0 Napoli
Date: 28 July 2020
Venue: San Siro
Inter Milan have reclaimed second spot in Serie A after defeating Napoli 2-0 in their final home encounter of the season.
After starring in Saturday's win 3-0 win over Genoa, Alexis Sanchez partnered Romelu Lukaku upfront while Lautaro Martínez dropped to the bench.
The hosts got off to a perfect start when Cristiano Biraghi's cross evaded Lukaku and found Danilo D'Ambrosio, who sent a first-time finish into the bottom corner.
Despite the early setback, Napoli started seeing more of the ball as the half went on, with Piotr Zielinski and Matteo Politano going close to scoring at the midway point.
The visitors should have been level in the 36th minute when Lorenzo Insigne skipped past Antonio Candreva but with the whole goal to aim at, he failed to find the target from close range.
Gennaro Gattuso's men were unable to take advantage of their dominance in the first half while they were lucky not to concede a second goal as Alex Meret tipped Lukaku's effort inches wide of the upright.
It was more of the same in the second half from Napoli as they pushed for an equaliser, which prompted Inter coach Antonio Conte to introduce defender Diego Godin for Candreva on the hour mark.
The visitors were made to pay for not capitalising on their advantage as, Martinez doubled Inter's lead in the 74th minute with superb finish into the bottom corner from 22 yards out.
Napoli were unable to claw themselves back into the contest in the latter stages of the half as the encounter finished 2-0 to the hosts, leaving their top six hopes out of their hands heading into the final week of the season.
