Maurizio Sarri made four changes to the side that lost to Napoli on penalties in the Coppa Italia final, with shot-stopper Wojciech Szczesny returning alongside Federico Bernardeschi, Adrien Rabiot and Mattia De Sciglio.

The visitors were causing problems for Bologna in the early stages, with Ronaldo coming close to opening the scoring in the seventh minute after seeing his stinging effort saved by goalkeeper Lukas Skorupski made a good save.

Sarri's charges were fortunate to receive a penalty in the 22nd minute after the referee was persuaded to review an incident inside the box after Stefano Denswil pulled Matthijs de Ligt by his shirt. Ronaldo stepped up to take the spot-kick and drilled his effort through the middle to hand his side the lead.

Paulo Dybala doubled Juventus' lead with nine minutes remaining of the first stanza after turning Denswil in the danger area before curling a powerful strike into the top corner.

Ronaldo and Dybala combined to good effect five minutes before the break but the Argentine struck his effort post wide of the mark.

The Old Lady enjoyed a bright start in the second stanza but they lacked the luck, as five minutes from the break Ronaldo's shot missed an open net after beating Skorupski in a one-on-one range.

Juventus were forced to make a change on the hour mark as De Sciglio pulled his hamstring was eventually replaced by Danilo while Blaise Matuidi and Aaron Ramsey provided fresh legs in places of Rabiot and Miralem Pjanic.

Sarri's men kept their shape at the back in the closing minutes, running down the clock and they caught the hosts on a counter-attack in the last minute, as Ronaldo found the back of the net from Douglas Costa's cross but the goal was ruled out for offisde.

Juventus were reduced to ten men in stoppage time after Danilo got his second yellow card but the Old Lady were not in danger of dropping points despite Bologna's late surge as they held on to pull clear of Lazio.
