During this past international break, Brazil and Argentina renewed their historic rivalry, with a Nicolas Otamendi header proving decisive as the reigning world champions defeated the Selecao in what was the first time ever they had lost a FIFA World Cup qualifier at home.
Ordinarily, the 1-0 victory would have been the prevailing storyline from the encounter, but the result was overshadowed by multiple incidents within the game, one of which was Messi's spat with Real and Brazil winger Rodrygo.
What was actually said between the stars remains a mystery, but rumours have suggested that the 22-year-old accused La Albiceleste of playing like "cowards", something that is believed to have not gone down well with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.
Following Los Blancos' latest 4-2 UEFA Champions League victory over Napoli, in which Rodrygo scored, the 19-capped international was quizzed on the argument that ensued at the Maracana, to which he jokingly responded, as per 90min: "I can't talk about that, Madrid won't let me."

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier was also marred by police clashing with fans as violence arose in the stands. While Brazil's form may be questionable at the moment, Rodrygo's form with his club has been good, having scored in his past four matches for Los Merengues.
