Karim Benzema: The Ballon d'Or Isn't An Obsession

With Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema being one of LaLiga's standout performers this season, helping Los Blancos claim a 34th league title, the Frenchman has now shared his thoughts regarding the Ballon d'Or.

Benzema, 32, has been Real's go-to man for goals in the 2019/20 campaign, particularly with Eden Hazard suffering recurring injuries and new boy Luka Jovic failing to have any sort of meaningful impact.

So impressive has the former Olympique Lyon starlet been that he was considered by many football pundits and analysts to be a strong candidate to win this year's edition of the Golden Ball before the event organisers decided to cancel it due to the effects of the coronavirus.

"Of course, I think about the Ballon d'Or," Benzema told Marca.

"I have since I was small, but it's not an obsession. It doesn't drive me crazy, but when you're competitive it's normal to think about it.

"I think about being the best player in the world, irrespective of being a No. 9, No. 10 or whatever."

The centre-forward also had some words of appreciation for all the head coaches he's played under in his career.

"I've learned something from everyone," Benzema added.

"(Jose) Mourinho, (Carlo) Ancelotti, (Henri) Guerin, (Zinedine) Zidane. They've all given me something."
