David Beckham belongs to a group of the richest footballers ever to have graced the game, and is now keen to push his newly-founded club to the next level by buying a Real Madrid star.
The former Los Blancos, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain winger reportedly has a net worth of $450 million (R8.6 billion).
He is part-owner of Inter Miami, and believes that Los Blancos playmaker James Rodriguez could take his young club to the next level.
According to Goal, Beckham has used his old connections at Real to sound out president Florentino Perez over potentially signing the 28-year-old.
Rodriguez has fallen out of favour under manager Zinedine Zidane, and a two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich was not enough to reignite his career either.
As a consequence, the Spanish side are understood to be keen to sell him in the coming window – a year before his contract expires.
Beckham, meanwhile, considers Rodriguez a great footballer who could become the poster boy of his new side, according to the report.
The Colombian could take Inter Miami to the next level in terms of commercialisation and would be a big coup for Major League Soccer as a whole.
Beckham's entourage have reportedly begun informal talks with Rodriguez's representatives, while the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Everton – where he could link up with his former boss Carlo Ancelotti – and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been linked with his services.
It remains to be seen if Rodriguez, who is still in the peak of his career, would prefer a move within Europe or is ready to make the switch to the MLS.
