10 Of Football's Strangest Transfers

Thomas Gravesen (joined Real Madrid from Everton in 2005)

With a Manchester United veteran linked with arguably one of the strangest moves in recent times, here are 10 of the weirdest and most unexpected transfers football has ever seen, featuring deals from FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Red Devils skipper Ashley Young is believed to have agreed a deal with Inter Milan, though the 34-year-old is only expected to join Antonio Conte's side at the end of the season once his contract at Old Trafford expires.

Many are surprised that the Englishman has been sought out by the Italian giants, who are top of the Serie A table, especially as he has been considered past his best for a long time by supporters of the Manchester club.

Strange and unanticipated deals are part of football, and there cannot be many odder than Thomas Gravesen's 2005 move from Everton to Los Blancos. At the time, the transfer caught many fans of the club off guard, unlike his exit from the Spanish side just a season and a half later.

In 2009, the LaLiga giants were at it again when they announced the loan signing of French winger Julien Faubert from West Ham United. After just two appearances in six months, the Frenchman returned to his parent club, where he spent another three seasons.

In that same year, Real's bitter rivals Barcelona lured talented centre-back Dmytro Chyhrynskyi to Spain from Shakhtar Donetsk, but his time in LaLiga did not last long. The defender arrived without much of a reputation in Europe, and left just a season later after he was unable to impress Pep Guardiola.

Nicklas Bendtner features for his short stint at Juventus in 2012, as does Dutch legend Edgar Davids, who, after a two-year break, joined Barnet in a player/coach role. The retired Netherlands international represented the then Conference side on 38 occasions, scoring one goal.
