Spanish football writer and journalist Guillem Balague believes it is "certain" that the 35-year-old will not be heading back to the Blaugrana ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
Writing in a column for BBC Sport, he said Messi "is expected to decide in the coming hours where he will be playing his football next season" and that "the only thing that seems certain is that it will not be at Barcelona".
Balague added that the Argentine's "camp has told Barcelona the decision on his future is imminent and they cannot wait any longer for a proposal from them that has not arrived, despite promises the Catalan club would have something in place by now".
This comes amid reports that Messi's entourage are putting pressure on the LaLiga champions to formalise an offer as the only proposal he has received, believed to be from Saudi Arabia, expires in two weeks' time.
It is believed the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner will part ways with Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, after two years at the French giants.
