The Spaniard defended the Portuguese superstar's remarks – during which he had suggested Real would be above FC Barcelona in the league if his teammates played like him – insisting the Portuguese was not trying blame his colleagues for the loss.
"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion," he said, according to Marca.
"I know Cristiano well and I don't think he was trying to shift the blame on to any of his teammates. We're proud of everyone who forms part of the squad, of the hard work and graft put in by the players who play less.
"Players like Lucas Vazquez, Jese and Borja Mayoral are giving their all because they understand how hard it is to get this far, but Cris is free to give his opinion.
"Maybe he thinks the same as me, but he expressed himself like that. He didn't say what he meant. Maybe his words were taken out of context.
"As captain, the only thing I can say is that I'm proud of everyone. This is when we really need to be united. We need everyone's support and everyone's sacrifice.
"Those of us who've been here the longest should stress that a little more. I've never heard anything like that come out of his mouth."
