Former Manchester City striker Robinho has claimed the English club had a certain plan for FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.

The Brazilian left Real Madrid in 2008 to join the Citizens, who, at the time, were at the beginning of their quest to become one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Nine years later, City are one of the most feared teams in the Premier League, and Robinho has now claimed that the club had plans to sign Messi and Kaka.
"I spoke a few times with the owner Sheikh Mansour," he told the Daily Mail.
"He told me he was going to go big to get Kaka and Lionel Messi. Kaka was close. But Messi... I think Messi was beyond them.
"But I believed in the project. The sheikh had the ambition to create the best team in the world and now look at them.
"They have the best manager in the world in Pep Guardiola and can go toe to toe with anyone."

Messi has been linked with City on many occasions, although it is widely believed that if he were to ever leave Barca, it would be to return to Newell's Old Boys in Argentina.
