The match will honour the Englishman's 12 years of service to the club and is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 3 August 2016.
Rooney expressed his delight at the opportunity to have a testimonial, and also hinted that there may be a surprise or two on the night.
"I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality," Rooney told United's official website.
"Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club.
"The match night will obviously be special for me and my family, but I hope it will be a night of celebration for all involved and that we can also deliver one or two surprises."
According to the Daily Star, it is believed Rooney has already contacted former Red Devils teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and convinced him to take part.
"Ronaldo is a busy man, but there was no way he would miss something like this. It promises to be an all-star cast, but Ronaldo will be the biggest of the lot. He might even upstage Wayne himself," a source told the newspaper.
