According to Catalunya Radio, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has admitted to his former teammate that he wants to return to the Blaugrana.
Messi's current deal with Paris Saint-Germain expires in two months' time and with extension talks having seemingly stalled, it seems the Rosario native prefers making a spectacular comeback to the club where he established himself as a football icon, with Xavi having also been vocal about his desire to have Messi back at the Camp Nou.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner was forced out of Catalonia in 2021 after the club's dire financial situation saw them unable to extend the attacker's contract in Spain.
Consequently, the diminutive playmaker joined PSG, and has added a Ligue 1 title, a seventh Ballon d'Or victory and a World Cup trophy to his name since, but with the French champions seemingly in a state of instability, Messi could now prefer a return to Barca.
If Blaugrana fans are to witness the La Masia alumni grace the Camp Nou once again, it will likely depend on club president Joan Laporta.
The Spanish executive hinged his presidential campaign in 2021 on being able to sign the legend to a new deal that year, but ultimately did not, and this reportedly caused a breakdown in the relationship between Laporta and the Messi camp.
