FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has not won the Pichichi trophy, awarded to the best goalscorer in a La Liga season, since 2012/13, but could now beat longstanding rival Cristiano Ronaldo to the prize.

The Argentine is leading the race with 23 strikes, two more than Luis Suarez and four more than Ronaldo.
Liverpool flop Iaga Aspas has found his form for Celta Vigo this season, scoring 14 league goals – one more than Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann.
Messi has won the Pichichi trophy three times during his career so far, as many as longstanding rival Ronaldo.
However, the Blaugrana talisman has not been the top league goalscorer in Spain since netting 46 times over the course of the 2012/13 season.

Ronaldo shared the trophy with Suarez in 2013/14 (31 goals), before lifting it in 2014/15 (48 goals), while the Uruguayan was crowned the best goalscorer in Spain last season after netting 40 times.
