The Dutchman insists that Messi wouldn't be able to play under a boss he didn't get along with, suggesting that the Argentine gets along well with his current boss Luis Enrique.
"Messi is important to the team, not just in terms of football, but also because of how he behaves," he told Marca.
"Do you think I'd go to work with someone I didn't like?
"Messi has influence because he's the best.
"He can't accept that someone will come in who won't get results at the end of the day."
Cruyff went on to discuss Enrique's future with the Spanish giants, saying that he believes the Spaniard has his doubts as to whether he'll be the boss next season.
"I don't know if he'll stay on. I don't know anything about his personal affairs.
"If you look at the outcome, it's a good season and you'd say, 'He won't go.'
"But I don't know anything about his personal affairs. He has his doubts."
Messi and Enrique's relationship was called into question near the start of the season, when the 27-year-old was left on the bench by his Spanish boss.
