The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is one of football's greatest-ever players, who is admired not only by followers of the sport, but also by those he goes up against on a weekly basis.
Former Espanyol winger Matias Vargas is one of them, with the ex-LALIGA star having admitted that he kept the Argentine's unwashed shirt in his bed with him after swapping jerseys with the then-Barcelona No. 10 in 2020.
"I slept with a Messi shirt next to my pillow for two or three months," he told Fox Sports.
"Dirty, as it was. I played against him and we changed them.
"My mother told me 'let me wash it'. I told her not to touch it."
Today, Vargas represents Shanghai Port FC in the Chinese Super League, having left Espanyol to join the club in August 2022.
The 26-year-old is Argentine and made two appearances for his national team between 2018 and 2019, but never played alongside Messi.

Vargas made his Albiceleste debut in a 3-0 win over Guatemala in an international friendly in 2018, before coming off the bench in a 6-1 friendly win over Ecuador in 2019.
