Despite the Catalans enjoying most of the possession on Tuesday night, Chelsea seemed fairly comfortable with their 1-0 lead until the 75th minute.
But after Christensen's pass across his own box failed to find Cesc Fabregas's feet in midfield, while Cesar Azpilicueta was also unable to get a foot to the ball, Iniesta intercepted it before cleverly finding Messi.
The Argentine's left-footed finish drew the score level at Stamford Bridge, and gave Ernesto Valverde's side an all-important away goal.
Conte, who was happy with the way his team played, insisted that Barca's superstars will always make teams pay for their mistakes.
"We were very close to playing a perfect game and I think we paid dearly for one mistake," he said, according to Marca.
"Against this opponent and type of player, like a (Lionel) Messi, an (Andres) Iniesta or a (Luis) Suarez, if you make a mistake then you pay.
"It's a pity because I think at the end of the game we are disappointed with the final result.
"But, at the same time, this game must give us a lot of confidence to trust that in the second leg qualification is open."
Despite Christensen's costly mistake, the Blues boss defended his 21-year-old defender.
"I think Christensen's performance was a very good performance, an incredible performance. We are talking about a player who is only 21 years old here," he added.
