Final Decision In Relegation Farce Of Bongani Zungu's Amiens SC Confirmed

Bongani Zungu

Following a number of U-turns in the relegation saga involving Bongani Zungu's Amiens SC after the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season was cancelled, an official announcement has now been made.

Initially, Amiens, the side Bafana Bafana midfielder Zungu currently plays for, and Toulouse were relegated after the Ligue 1 season was cancelled with 10 games to spare and with both teams in the bottom spots.

On 9 June, though, the French Council of State ruled that the relegation of both sides was unlawful and suggested extending the league to 22 teams next season to accommodate them.

However, the board of directors of the French Football Association (LFP) unanimously voted against the extension – a decision that has now been ratified, which means that Toulouse and Amiens will start the 2020/21 campaign in Ligue 2.

"The General Assembly of the LFP adopted by a majority of 74.49% of the votes cast the resolution proposed by the Board of Directors to maintain the format of Ligue 1 at 20 clubs for the 2020 season / 2021," a statement on the LFP's official website read.

"This vote came after an in-depth examination of the sports challenges of a Ligue 1 to 20, 21 or 22 clubs on the 2020/2021 competition calendar and the consequences on the players' health.

"This review also focused on the financial impacts, the distribution of audiovisual rights as well as the contractual repercussions with Ligue 1 broadcasters.

"Following this decision and at the end of the Federal Assembly of the FFF on 26 June, the LFP will convene on June 26 a Board of Directors which will adopt the general calendar of competitions for the 2020/2021 season."

This also means that Lorient and Lens, who were at the summit of Ligue 2 when the 2019/20 French football campaign was cancelled, will form part of the 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign.
