Result: Paris Saint-Germain 0-0 Olympique Lyon (PSG won 6-5 on penalties)
Date: 31 July 2020
Venue: Stade de France
Paris Saint-Germain have won their fourth trophy of the 2019/2020 season after defeating Olympique Lyon on penalties in the Coupe de la Ligue final.
Thomas Tuchel were still without the services of Kylian Mbappe while Layvin Kurzawa, Presnel Kimpembe and Marco Verratti were recalled after starting last week's French Cup final on the bench.
It was an evenly contested affair early on, with both sides getting sights at goal as Neymar curled an effort wide on eight minutes before Memphis Depay fired over the crossbar five minutes later.
PSG took control of the encounter as the half went on but chances were hard to come by as Lyon were well marshalled to thwart the likes of Neymar and Angel di Maria.
The Ligue 1 champions did go close to breaking the deadlock two minutes before the break through Idrissa Gueye's stinging effort but Anthony Lopes produced a superb save to keep the scores level at the break.
With the opening stages of the second half not going to plan, PSG coach Tuchel made the first substitutions just before the hour mark as Mauro Icardi and Gueye made way for Pablo Sarabia and Ander Herrera.
The tempo of the encounter was not played at a usual competitive level, with the second stanza being interrupted by a flurry of substitutions and breaks.
PSG had a chance to win the game on 88 minutes but Lopes was on hand to tip Neymar's header over the crossbar, sending the game to extra-time.
While chances were hard to come by in extra-time, Lyon were reduced to 10 men in the 119th minute when Rafael da Silva was shown a straight red card for a lunge on his former Manchester United teammate Di Maria.
The match was eventually decided by a penalty shoot-out, where PSG managed to triumph 6-5 to secure the League Cup title, which will be suspended indefinitely from next season.
