Span defeated England 1-0 at Stadium Australia on Sunday afternoon to win the Women's World Cup for the first time in the country's history.

Hermoso, who has enjoyed an 11-year career on the international stage, has since come out to defend Rubiales after he kissed her as Spain players collected their winner's medals following their triumph.

After initially saying on Instagram live that she "didn't like it", the 33-year-old later called for there not to be an overreaction after the president was criticised heavily on social media for his behaviour.

"It was a totally spontaneous mutual gesture because of the immense joy that winning a World Cup brings," she said, according to AFP.

"The president and I have a great relationship, his behaviour with all of us has been outstanding and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude.

"A gesture of friendship and gratitude cannot be gone over so much, we have won a World Cup and we are not going to deviate from what is important."
