Result: Rayo Vallecano 3-2 Real Madrid

Date: 07 November 2022

Venue: Estadio de Vallecas

Los Blancos were without the services of striker Karim Benzema, as Marco Asensio joined Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior in the attack while Eder Militao and Aurelien Tchouameni were also recalled.

The home side got off to the perfect start when Santi Comesana opened the scoring on five minutes after turning home Fran Garcia's cross with a neat volley.

While Los Blancos struggled to carve out openings, the hosts went close to bagging a second goal on 30 minutes when Isi Palazon drew a fine save from Courtois.

The visitors grew stronger in the latter stages of the first half and they awarded a penalty after a VAR review for Garcia's challenge on Asensio in the box, which allowed Luka Modric to convert.

Madrid then went ahead on 41 minutes when Asesnio turned provider as his corner was headed home by Brazil international Militao.

That joy was short-lived as Vallecano drew level on the stroke of halftime when Alvaro Garcia blasted beyond Courtois after a chaotic scramble in the Real box.

The home side had the chance to bag the go-ahead goal on the hour mark when Garcia broke down the right flank and picked out Sergio Camello, who sent his header wide of the target.

Five minutes later, Vallecano were awarded a penalty of their own for a handball on Dani Carvajal. Oscar Trejo stepped up and saw his penalty saved, but he was on hand to turn home the rebound to hand his side the lead.

Brazilian winger Rodrygo should have equalised on 89 minutes after getting on the end of Asensio's cross, but he blazed over from point-blank range as Rayo held on for a famous win.
