Raheem Sterling was recalled to the Gunners starting line-up in place of the injured Kai Havertz, as Leandro Trossard moved to the striker's role while Ethan Nwaneri completed the attack. The game was played at a slow pace in the early stages, with the Gunners struggling to carve out any clear-cut chances in the opening 20 minutes while the Foxes didn't offer much either.
That was unfortunately the trend for the entire of the first half, with the game's first big chance arriving just before the break when Wilfried Ndidi headed wide from a cross from six yards out.
Both sides were unchanged for the second period, as both sides had something to play for, with the Gunners looking to close the gap on Liverpool while Leicester continue their fight for survival.
With just one effort on target, Arteta looked to re-shuffle the pack on the hour mark and withdrew the ineffective Sterling for midfielder Mikel Merino, who moved into the striker's role.
Th decision proved to be genius one as the Spanish midfielder put the Gunners ahead on 80 minutes by rising well and nodding home a cross from Nwaneri.
The visitors made the game safe on 87 minutes as Trossard turned provider to pick out Merino, who calmly slotted home at the far post as the Gunners move four points behind Liverpool.
