The previous record before the current window opened was held by Oscar, whose move from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG in January 2017 cost €60 million (R900 million).
However, Diego Costa's €66 million (R990 million) switch from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid and Virgil van Dijk's €78.8 million (R1.2 billion) move from Southampton to Liverpool both bettered Oscar's whopping China deal.
Although Costa and Van Dijk's transfers were announced before the window officially opened, they both became effective on 1 January, which means the latter essentially broke Oscar's record.
However, Van Dijk couldn't enjoy being the most expensive January transfer for long as he was replaced after just six days by Philippe Coutinho's €160 million (R2.4 billion) transfer from the Reds to FC Barcelona on 6 January, which is also the second most expensive deal ever, beaten only by Neymar's €222 million (R3.3 billion) world record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2017.
Many still remember the crazy January deadline day in 2011 that saw Fernando Torres join Chelsea from Liverpool for €58.5 million (R877 million), while Newcastle United's Andy Carroll moved to the Reds for €41 million (R615 million). They are the fifth and ninth, respectively, most expensive January deals ever.
Other players among the 11 costliest January transfers include Alex Teixeira, Juan Mata, Jackson Martinez, Lucas Moura and Julian Draxler.
