2022 FIFA World Cup Play-Off Final Report: Wales v Ukraine 05 June 2022

Wales have qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ukraine 1-0 in the play-off final on Sunday evening.

Result: Wales 1-0 Ukraine

Date: 05 June 2022

Venue: Cardiff City Stadium

Gareth Bale was back in the Wales line-up after being rested for the game against Poland, as Aaron Ramsey and Joe Allen started in the middle of the park.

Ukraine had the first real opening at goal after 13 minutes when Roman Yaremchuk raced clear down the right side of the box and saw his low strike saved by goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

While Wales struggled to carve out, Hennessy had a busy first half as he was called upon to keep out Oleksander Zinchenko's strike from distance, before he had to rush off his line to deny Viktor Tsygankov on 30 minutes.

However, the home side made the breakthrough from a dead-ball situation when Bale's swerving free-kick deflected off Andriy Yarmolenko and sailed into the back of the net.

Wales took that advantage into the break, but they should have had a second goal shortly after the break as a swift counter attack ended with Roofe teeing up Ramsey who fired from 10 yards out.

Ukraine continued pushing for an equaliser and went close to getting their reward in the 65th minute when Ruslan Malinovskyi cut onto his left foot and sent a powerful strike inches wide of the upright.

Brennan Johnson replaced Daniel James for the final 20 minutes and almost an immediate impact when he rattled the upright with a first-time volley at the far post.

Hennessey came to Wales' rescue with seven minutes left on the clock as produced a superb save one-handed save to keep out Artem Dovbyk's towering header.

That proved to be Ukraine's final clear-cut opening as Wales defended superbly to see out the win and secure their ticket to Qatar.
