United made five changes, with Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all dropped to the bench. On the other hand, the Blues made just three changes, as goalkeeper Willy Caballero was given a chance in goal while Reece James and Mason Mount were both recalled.

Frank Lampard's charges were on the front foot early on as James almost opened the scoring in the tenth minute with a cracking strike from range that was pushed away by United shot-stopper David de Gea.

Marcos Alonso had a glorious chance to give Chelsea the lead five minutes later after he was picked out by James at the back post but he could not keep his header down, as his effort sailed over the bar.

There was a long stoppage time in the first stanza after head injury to Eric Bailly, who was replaced by Martial on the stroke of half-time but the Blues took the lead in the 11th minute of added time through Olivier Giroud, who turned home Cesar Azpilicueta's cross.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's had a horrible start in the second stanza, as just a minute from the break, Brandon Williams' back pass was intercepted by Mount, who went clear to drill a low strike from the edge of the box past De Gea, who should have done better.

The Norwegian manager responded with a double change, after bringing on Pogba in place of Fred while Greenwood for Daniel James.

The Red Devils were fashioning chances after that with numbers forward but they were caught on a quick transition in the last quarter of an hour, as Alonso delivered a teasing low cross searching for Antonio Rudiger, who poked home at the near for the third goal.

United were given a chance to get on the scoresheet in the last five minutes after Callum Hudson-Odoi brought down Martial inside the box, with the referee having no other choice but to point to award a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes converted.

Fernandes' goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation as the Blues ran out 3-1 winners to set up a final with London rivals Arsenal.
