FA Cup Report: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United 16 March 2019

Manchester United

FA Cup

Result: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Manchester United

Date: 16 March 2019

Venue: Molineux Stadium    Manchester United's FA Cup journey came to an end after suffering a shock 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium.   United made four changes from from their defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League as goalkeeper Sergio Romero, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Ander Herrera earned re-calls.
The visitors had their first shot in anger in the 13th minute through Marcus Rashford, whose long range effort was smothered by Wolves shot-stopper John Ruddy.   Diogo Jota had the best chance of the first stanza for Nuno Espírito Santo's charges three minutes before the break after he was sent clear on goal by Raul Jimenez's, but Romero pulled off a good save from just inside the box to keep the score level.   Jimenez almost broke the deadlock for Wolves eight minutes after the break with a powerful header that was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Romero.   With 20 minutes to go,  Jimenez finally broke the deadlock for the hosts with a neat turn and finish inside the box following a goal-mouth scramble.   Jota doubled the lead for Wolves six minutes later after racing through on goal before finishing past Romero at his near post.   United thought were down to ten men after the referee initially gave Victor Lindelöf a red card for a sliding tackle on Jota, but the referee's decision was overturned by the Video Assistant Referee.   Rashford gave United hope after pulling a goal back deep in stoppage time, but it was too little too late as Wolves advanced to the final four.
