FA Cup Report: Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton 05 January 2020

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Southampton

Date: 05 January 2020

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 victory over Southampton in a thrilling fourth-round replay.

Spurs made four changes from Sunday's win over Chelsea as Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Tanguy Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon came were drafted into the line-up.

Despite the visitors' lively start,  they were unfortunate to go behind in the 12th minute after Jack Stephens turned Ndombele's low shot to the back of his own net.

Southampton kept on piling the pressure on Spurs and came close to finding the equaliser in the 19th minute but Danny Ings rattled the crossbar with a strike from the edge of the six-yard box.

Shane Long eventually levelled matters for Ralph Hasenhuttl's charges with 11 minutes left of the first stanza with an easy finish from close rane after Lloris clumsily parried Nathan Redmond's low shot into the striker's path.

Southampton were forced change into a change with five minutes left of the first stanza, with the injured James Ward-Prowse making way for Jannik Vestergaard.

The game opened up in the early exchanges of the second stanza and Boufal had a great chance to give the Saints the lead five minutes after the break but he dragged his shot wide of Lloris upright.

Hasenhuttl's troops were getting into the game again after the hour-mark and eventually took the lead in the 72nd minute after Ings clinically finished off a counter-attack that was initiated by Redmond.

However, Moura made up for his earlier miss as he equalised for Jose Mourinho's army six minutes thereafter with a sweeping strike into the bottom corner after being teed up from deep by second-half substitute Dele Alli.

There was drama towards the end as Tottenham were awarded a penalty in the last three minutes after Son went down inside the box from a challenge by Dunn. The South Korean forward stepped up himself and slotted into the bottom corner to send Spurs to the next round.
