FA Cup Report: Shrewsbury Town v Liverpool 26 January 2020

Result: Shrewsbury Town 2-2 Liverpool

Date: 26 January 2020

Venue: Montgomery Waters Meadow

Third tier side Shrewsbury Town managed to earn themselves an FA Cup replay after rallying back from two goals down to hold Liverpool to a 2-2 draw.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp named a completely new line-up, as Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Fabinho all started for the first time this year after recovering from injuries while Divock Origi led the front line alongside Takumi Minamino.

The encounter was open in the early exchanges and the visitors took their first opportunity in the 15th minute after Curtis Jones fired home the opener past Shrewsbury goalkeeper Max O'Leary after Pedro Chirivella threaded a pass into his stride.

Shrewsbury had a glorious chance to level matters in the 24th minute after Shaun Whalley went clear on goal but his low shot was saved by Liverpool shot-stopper Adrian in a one-on-one situation.

Whalley had another great chance to find the equaliser with six minutes remaining of the first stanza after breaking away free on the left side of the box but he guided his curling shot wide of the bottom post, despite having only Adrian to beat.

Samuel Ricketts' charges were unlucky within a minute after the break, as Donald Love redirected a cross into his own net, giving Liverpool a two-goal lead.

The hosts were enterprising going forward and Callum Lang burst clear on goal just before the hour-mark from a through ball in the heart of defence and struck a low shot towards the bottom corner but his effort was saved by Adrian in a one-on-one situation.

Shrewsbury's pressure finally paid off in the 65th minute as they won a penalty after Yasser Larouci brought down Josh Laurent inside the box. Jason Cummings held his nerve from 12-yards out and sent Adrian the wrong way with low strike to reduce the deficit.

Alex Oxlade-Chamerlain was introduced soon after, but Shrewsbury managed restore parity through Cummings, who went through on goal to slot past Adrian the equaliser after some poor defending from Dejan Lovren.

Klopp needed inspiration from the bench in the last 11 minutes, as he brought on Mohamed Salah in place of Matip while the German mentor also unleashed Roberto Firmino in the last five minutes for Minamino.
