FA Cup Report: Manchester United v Watford

FA Cup Report: Manchester United v Watford

Result: Manchester United 1-0 Watford

Date: 09 January 2021

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester United scraped to a 1-0 win over Championship side Watford to secure a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Even with the number of changes made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils went ahead early on as Scott McTominay sent a fine header into the bottom corner.

The Hornets were nearly back on level terms on 16 minutes when Adam Masina saw his effort cleared off the line by Axel Tuanzebe after Dean Henderson got a hand to his strike.

Watford certainly grew into the game thereafter, with Nathaniel Chalobah going close with a fizzing strike from the edge of the United box.

United went close with a chance of their own five minutes before the break when Donny van de Beek's flick played in Juan Mata, who was denied by Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.

The half did end on a sour note for Solskjaer's men as Eric Bailly suffered knock after a collision with Henderson and had to be replaced by Harry Maguire.

With the Red Devils struggling to carve out chances in the second half, Solskjaer introduced Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in the 68th minute.

Rashford should have added a second goal with 10 minutes left after skipping past two Watford defenders but the striker was unable to find a way past Bachman.

Nevertheless, McTominay's first-half header was enough to send United into the fourth round ahead of Monday night's draw.
