FA Cup Report: Liverpool v Shrewsbury Town 04 February 2020

Result: Liverpool 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Date: 04 February 2020

Venue: Anfield

Liverpool, who were without the first team stars and Jurgen Klopp, progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with 1-0 win over Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.

The Reds fielded the club's U-23 side as promised which was managed by Neil Critchley, who deputised for head coach Jurgen Klopp.

After a quiet start to the half, Liverpool nearly broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute whe Adam Lewis' cross-cum-shot was parried over the crossbar by Shrewsbury goalkeeper Max O'Leary.

The Reds created chances going forward but lacked the final pass while the League One side were growing in the game in the latter stages of the first stanza, although they were unable to trouble Liverpool shot-stopperCaoimhin Kelleher

The hosts had a chance to break the deadlock eight minutes from the break after Williams went clear on an overlap but O'Leary was on hand to make a great save to keep Shrewsbury in the game.

The visitors thought they had found the breakthrough just before the hour-mark after Shaun Whalley tapped from close range but the goal was chalked off by the Video Assistant Referee for offside in the build-up.

Liverpool then broke the deadlock with 15 minutes left in the stanza after Ro-Shaun Williams deflected Williams's cross into his own net.

Shrewsbury sent numbers forward in search of an equaliser, but the Reds held on in the end to book a spot in the fifth round, where they will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
