Europa League Final Starting XI: Manchester United v Ajax Amsterdam

Europa League Final Starting XI: Manchester United v Ajax Amsterdam

Manchester United could complete their European trophy set, while Ajax are striving for their first European silverware in 22 years – here is how the two sides will line up for the UEFA Europa League final.

UEFA Europa League final

Teams: Manchester United vs Ajax Amsterdam

Date: 24 May

Venue: Friends Arena, Stockholm, Sweden

Jose Mourinho's side could become only the fifth team to win the full set of European trophies (UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Europa League), joining Ajax, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Juventus – only the Europa League is currently missing from their trophy cabinet.

Ajax, meanwhile, will attempt to claim their first European trophy in 22 years after lifting the Champions League title in 1995.

Overall, the Dutch giants have reached their 15th European final, winning 10 and losing four of their previous 14. United will be playing their 12th European final, having won six and lost five – including the last three – of their previous 11 contests.

Both teams enter the game on the back of mixed performances, with United having won only two of their past eight matches in all competitions, while Ajax have lost three and won three of their past six games.

Tonight's clash will be the fifth meeting between the two clubs, with each side winning two so far. In one of those previous matches, back in 1976/77, former Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol scored the only goal as his side beat United 1-0.

The game is of the utmost importance for United, who need to win in order to qualify for next season's Champions League, while Ajax will start in the qualification rounds of the competition even if they lose the final, because of their final position in the Dutch Eredivisie.

Jose Mourinho, who could lift the 25th trophy of his coaching career tonight, has faced Ajax six times before, winning all six clashes with a goal difference of 20-2.
