Lampard spent many years playing under Mourinho in his playing career, but that did not stop the Englishman from getting involved in an altercation with his former boss on Tuesday night.
The exchange began when Chelsea were a goal up against the Lilywhites, after Timo Werner opened his account for the Blues with a neat finish in the 19th minute.
According to football journalist John Cross, Mourinho said: "Frank, you're losing 3-0 and you sit down", seemingly implying that Lampard was only vocal and standing on the touchline because his team was ahead, compared to when his men were 3-0 down against West Bromwich Albion on the weekend, although they did come back to salvage a draw in that fixture.
The Blues boss is believed to have responded by telling his ex-coach to go sit down in his chair, but it was the Portuguese tactician who ultimately got the last laugh after his team won 5-4 on penalties.
Speaking at the end of the match, the Chelsea manager played down the heated exchange.
"We were having some fun, I get on well with Jose," Lampard said, as per Eurosport.
Mourinho: Why I Followed Player To Toilet
"I was saying he speaks to the referee more than his players, I have huge respect for Jose. All was well at the end and that will never change."
