A Liverpool star has seemingly aimed a dig at Manchester City's inability to win the UEFA Champions League to date despite their dominance in England.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was asked during a press conference ahead of the first leg of the Reds' UCL round of 16 tie against Inter Milan if the four titles won by his club under Jurgen Klopp validated the amount of talent the Merseyside team has.
In his answer was a signal of intent as the England international admitted he felt the club has to do more as far as winning trophies are concerned, emphasising that failure to win a trophy this season would be a slight on the team.
The 23-year-old also seemingly could not help but mention City when answering the reporter as he stirred the pot on their simmering rivalry with their English counterparts by alluding to the fact that the Citizens are yet to bring the Champions League trophy back to the Etihad Stadium.
"We don't feel disappointed that we haven't won enough trophies, as the ones we have won are the biggest and best you can get your hands on," Alexandre-Arnold said on Tuesday ahead of their match against Inter, according to the Daily Mail.
"Not making any digs, but you look at Man City's amazing team and they haven't been able to lift the Champions League.
"They won a couple of Prems but haven't been able to win the Champions League. We've won both over the last few years and it shows you we can do it in both competitions.
"There is an expectation now, as a team and players, to win trophies. One trophy a season minimum is what we have to achieve. With the squad and manager we have, we should be winning trophies."
Having reached the Carabao Cup final, and being in the fifth round of the FA Cup and the round of 16 of the Champions League, Merseyside's red half could still accomplish a cup treble this season, having last achieved the feat in 2001 under the stewardship of Gerard Houllier.
