African goalkeepers are a rare commodity in the Premier League, which is why former Zimbabwe international Bruce Grobbelaar starts in goal, despite having made only 66 appearances in the competition (in the Premier League era).

The Durban-born shot-stopper is aided in defence by former Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool defender Kolo Toure, who is also this XI's most capped player with 353 appearances, and he features alongside ex-Everton star Joseph Yobo (228) and Bafana Bafana legend Lucas Radebe (197).

A star-studded midfield puts four-time African Footballer of the Year Yaya Toure (230) alongside Senegal international Mohamed Diame (239), with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel (249) and ex-Bolton Wanderers star El Hadji Diouf (243) operating at opposite ends of the diamond.

Legendary Blues striker Didier Drogba, who made 254 appearances across two spells with the London club, leads the line alongside Arsenal and Portsmouth legend Nwankwo Kanu (273) and former Newcastle United forward Shola Ameobi.
