Venue: St James' Park

Marcel Sabitzer returned to the United line-up in place of the suspended Casemiro, while Scott McTominay came in for Fred who dropped to the bench after his impressive week for Scotland.

The Red Devils had the first real chance on 12 minutes when Antony skipped past one player before playing Wout Weghorst, who could fire into the side-netting.

David de Gea then came to the visitors' rescue four minutes with a double save to deny Aleksander Isak and Joe Wilock in quick succession before Diogo Dalot cleared.

The Magpies were bouyed by the support in the stadium but let themselves down in the final third, as Sean Longstaff and Wilock both squandered golden chances in and around the 18 yard area.

It was particularly tough half for Ten Hag's charges, who failed to register a single effort on target in the opening 45 minutes.

The Red Devils manager then opted for a double change on the hour mark as Jadon Sancho and Antony Martial replaced Weghorst and Antony.

Newcastle would go on to take the lead in the 64th minute when Allan Saint-Maximin headed a cross back into the box for Wilock to head into an empty net from three yards.

The hosts went close to adding a second goal on 76 minutes when De Gea pushed Joelinton's header onto the crossbar, before Fabian Schar saw hiw header kept out by the upright seconds later.

However, Newcastle added a second goal with two minutes left on the clock as substitute Callum Wilson lost his marker and nodded home Trippier's cross to seal the win.
