Thiago Silva made history after becoming the oldest player to feature for the Blues at the age of 39, as Benoit Badiashile and Lesley Ugochukwu were recalled to the line up by Mauricio Pochettino.
However, the home side found the breakthrough after 13 minutes when Alexander Isak found the back of the net from close range after being teed up by Lewis Miley.
The visiting side were back on level terms ten minutes in fine style, as the in-form Raheem Sterling sent a superb free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net.
The game continued to be played at high tempo as the first half continued, with Enzo Fernandez going close for the Blues with a powerful strike that was kept out by Nick Pope while the home side looked lively on the counter.
Eddie Howe's charges were unlucky not to have gone into the break leading after Keiran Tripper's thunderous free-kick crashed against the crossbar with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez well beaten.
It was more of the same in the second half, but the Magpies restored their lead on the stroke of halftime when Jamal Lascelles nodded home an inviting cross from Anthony Gordon.
A minute later, the home side bagged a third goal as Joelinton pounced on an error from Thiago Silva to race through on goal and slot past Sanchez for his first league goal of the campaign.
It went from bad to worse for the home side in the 73rd minute club captain Reece James was sent off after picking up his second yellow card of the encounter.
Howe's charges did go on to grab a fourth goal in the final seven minutes when Miguel Almiron played in Gordon, who did well to carve out some space in the box before firing into the far corner.
