Liverpool Drop To Eighth Spot After Chelsea Statement

Liverpool have dropped to eighth spot on the Premier League table after playing to a goalless draw against Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Premier League

Result: Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Date: 04 April 2023

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Jurgen Klopp made six changes from the big defeat to Manchester City, as Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliot were dropped.

For the Blues, N'Golo Kante made his first start since August, while Wesley Fofana was also recalled as interim coach Bruno Saltor took charge of his first game.

The hosts had the first real opening on 12 minutes when Ben Chilwell broke free down the left and did well to tee up Kai Havertz, who was denied by a point-blank save from Alisson Becker.

Chelsea had the ball in the back of the net in the 25th minute when Reece James blasted past Alisson, however celebrations were cut short for an offside in the build-up.

Liverpool had been quiet for most of the half, but they went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock before the break as Fabinho's volley was deflected inches wide by Fofana.

The Blues had the ball in the back of net shortly after the break when Havertz was slipped through on goal bundled the ball past Alisson, however the goal was disallowed as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) spotted a handball before the goal.

Klopp eventually looked to his bench after 64 minutes as Salah and Robertson replaced Roberto Firmino and Konstantinos Tsimikas, as they visitors pushed for an opening goal.

Chances continued to fall for the home side, with Joao Felix presented with an opening in the 76th minute after an error from Alisson but the Portuguese midfielder failed to hit the target with his volley.

Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the latter stages of the second half, but lacked the cutting edge in the final third as the encounter ended all square in London.

Other results:

Leicester City 1-2 Aston Villa

Leeds United 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Bournemouth 0-2 Brighton and Hove Albion
