Arne Slot made four changes from the Reds' draw with Arsenal, as Kostas Tsimikas, Jarell Quansah, Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa came in for Andrew Robertson, Virgil Van Dijk, Curtis Jones and Luis Diaz

The Reds broke the deadlock on nine minutes when Conor Bradley raced into the box before pulling the ball back for Elliot, who slotted home from six yards out.

Brighton had a couple chances of their own as the half went on, with Danny Welbeck going closest by heading wide of the upright from eight yards.

The hosts did get back on level terms in the 31st minute as a neat passing move ended with Brajan Gruda sending a neat ball over the top for Yasin Abbas Ayari, who controlled and fired into the far corner.

However, Liverpool restored their lead just before the halftime break when Dominik Szoboszlai collected a pass from Elliot and instead of crossing, unleashed a powerful strike that sailed into the far corner.

Brighton should have got back on level terms on the hour mark as another neat passing ended with Gruda laying the ball off for Welbeck in the box, but the veteran striker was denied by goalkeeper Alisson Becker in the box.

The hosts were level for a second time in the 69th minute, as substitute Kaoru Mitoma netted five minutes after coming on by volleying home from close range after Welbeck's initial strike was saved by Alisson.

It was left to Brighton substitutes to combine for the winning goal, as Matthew O'Riley did well to send a cross into the six-yard area, where Jack Hinshelwood was on hand to fire home.
