Premier League side Middlesbrough have sacked Jose Mourinho's former assistant at Real Madrid, Aitor Karanka, as their manager.

The club announced their decision on Thursday afternoon, and thanked the Spaniard for his hours of hard work.
Karanka also released a statement to thank the club for the time he spent with them.
"I'd like to thank Middlesbrough for a wonderful opportunity and the players, staff and all the people at the club who I have worked with. I'd also like to thank the fans for their support. This club will always hold a special place for me and I wish everyone connected with Middlesbrough Football Club the very best for the future," he said via the club's official website.
Assistant coach Steve Agnew will take control of the first team with immediate effect.

Karanka joined 19th-placed Middlesbrough in 2013, and helped them claim promotion to the Premier League this season.
