Manchester United's Mason Greenwood was confronted by a fan on the street ahead of his imminent court hearing.
The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and making threats to kill in January, and was detained for three days before being released on bail.
An intensive police investigation has been ongoing since, and police will submit a report to the Crown Prosecution Service "imminently".
As per The Sun, a source close to the situation said: "He's still on bail but things are at an advanced stage. The police and CPS are currently discussing if there is a case or not to bring against him.
"There comes a point where a decision has to be made and things have reached that point."
In the wake of Greenwood's alleged crimes, Nike have dropped his sponsorship, EA Sports has removed him from the FIFA video game franchise, and he has also been removed from the Football Manager video game.
Cadbury, a United sponsor, also issued a statement saying they will not be using the forward in any of their marketing campaigns with the club.
The public displeasure is just as profuse, with a video emerging on TikTok showing a fan confronting Greenwood out in the street. In it, the striker can be seen gesturing with his hand for the man to leave him alone, although it is not clear what the man shouted at him.
Not long after news broke of Greenwood's arrest, United suspended the player too. They have prohibited him from participating in all team activities while the investigation takes place.
The forward has not played for the Red Devils since their 1-0 win over West Ham United in January.
