Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has slammed David de Gea's situation at the club and blames Real Madrid, the player and his agent.
De Gea was forced to watch the Red Devils' Premier League opener on the weekend from the stands by manager Louis van Gaal, who felt the player had lost focus due to all the speculation about a possible move away from the club.
Schmeichel insists the situation around the player's future is not ideal and is angry the saga has carried on for so long.
"If the player is not happy, his agent, himself and the club that want him should have sorted this a long time ago," Schmeichel told talkSPORT.
"It's sad that it's dragged into the season."
The former Champions League winner admits he would love to see De Gea remain at the club, but believes letting him go might be better for both parties.
"I'd really like De Gea to stay," Schmeichel added.
"For two years running, he's been player of the year. You don't let players like that go but if he wants to go, let him go and let Manchester United move on."
