The former Real Madrid claims United couldn't help him settle during his time at the club in the 2014/2015 season and he also wasn't happy about being played out of position.
However, Van Gaal has now hit back at Di Maria, insisting the player must also take responsibility.
"I have never seen a player who doesn't look at himself [like him]," the Dutchman said at his press conference.
"He looks at the way he performed here and [claims] it is always the fault of the manager.
"So he is one of the players who has no self-criticism. Unfortunately it is my life as a manager. It is always like that."
The Red Devils continue their push for Champions League football next season, as they host Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday evening.
