Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has surprised many by drawing comparisons between Lionel Messi and one of his players.

The United boss praised 35-year-old midfielder Michael Carrick after he impressed in the club's 1-0 win over Manchester City in the League Cup last week.
However, Carrick did not feature in the Red Devils' 0-0 draw against Burnley on the weekend, and Mourinho has explained why.
"Carrick isn't playing today, but he's important for us against Fenerbahce (who United will play against in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday)," Mourinho said in the aftermath of the game, as quoted by United's official Twitter account.
Mourinho had earlier already revealed why Carrick has only been used in a bit-part role this season, saying even Messi will not be as prolific when he reaches the United star's age.
"In five years' time, Messi will be 34 and we will all be crying that he is 34," he told AS.
"Michael is very difficult to replace. He is phenomenal. I have to manage him. I cannot expect from him what I expect from Rashford and Herrera.
"When he's on the pitch, he gives us important things. Stability in our game, mental freedom to the other guys.
"He's not just a player, he is someone who has a big understanding of the game and it's a pity you sometimes cannot stop the clock."

After the 0-0 draw at home to Burnley, United have now won only one of their past seven Premier League games, and have dropped to eighth place on the log.
